Whether in the Lindley ward or in Kirklees, our work is guided by the needs and priorities of all our residents.
BUSINESS RESILIENCE SURVEY
Kirklees Council has been working hard to ensure that businesses across our district are aware of the immediate financial support available to them during the Covid-19 crisis.
As the Coronavirus continues to impact the day-to-day operations of businesses in our District, we want to understand what the Council and its partners need to be doing to best support businesses to recover and build resilience.
The survey takes around 10-15 minutes to complete. If you have any issues completing the survey or any questions, please get in touch with the Kirklees Business Team business.enquiries@kirklees.gov.uk

ROAD SAFETY
We want to make our streets safe for everyone and we have been working with the Highway Safety Team and the Neighbourhood Policing Team to achieve this. Please use the contact details below to report to the council and to the Neighbourhood Policing Team. This will help us take appropriate action. Speeding is already a neighbourhood priority for the Police in Lindley.
Local authorities in particular have faced substantial budget and spending restrictions, which affect our ability to deliver the vast range of essential public services for which we are responsible. While road safety must accept its share of these restrictions, we understand cutting road safety services too far will mean more people being killed or injured.
Despite these challenges, local authorities can continue to deliver effective road safety services that help to keep their people alive and healthy by ensuring that their road safety services are:
Evidence-informed
Co-ordinated with other public services
Designed and delivered in partnership
Evaluated to ensure effectiveness
Please contact us with information:

Roads policing supports and complements road safety education and engineering, and is an essential part of road safety. It:
Deters illegal, dangerous and careless behaviour on the road
Detects illegal, dangerous and careless behaviour on the road
Identifies offenders
Identifies the causes of crashes
Helps to educate, and change the attitudes of, road users
Prevents other forms of crime
Identifies and removes dangerous vehicles
Please report issues to the Police
In an Emergency always dial 999.
For Non Emergencies dial 101.

We are in favour of 20mph limits and zones in Lindley, near our schools and residential areas.
Because it is safer, healthier, fairer, greener, quieter and better for people’s quality of life.
You are 7 times less likely to die if hit at 20mph than 30mph or 10 times if over 60 years old.
In the distance a 20mph car can stop, a 30mph car will still be doing 24mph. Far better to just miss than actually hit someone or be hit at any speed.
TAKING ACTION TO IMPROVE AIR QUALITY
Lindley councillors have welcomed the installation of an air quality monitor in their ward.
The new air quality equipment, installed in early May, is located on George Street in Lindley.
The unit, a Zephyr, is a lightweight air pollution sensor which measures gases and particulate matter formed from harmful emissions.
Councillor Cahal Burke (Lib Dems, Lindley) said:
“We have long campaigned for air quality improvements in Lindley. We have raised our concerns when houses have been allowed to be built in areas of poor air quality and we have had regular meetings with council officers to look at ways to improve the situation.
“It is estimated that 24,000 people die prematurely annually in the UK as a result of air pollution, while air pollution costs the UK economy £20 billion each year. We know there are short-term and long-term effects of air pollution on health.
“It’s important to know where pollution is concentrated, how it occurs and what elements are involved. Air quality monitoring is vital to help tackle poor air quality. Monitoring can help to ensure that the right steps are being taken.”
His colleague, Cllr Richard Eastwood, said:
“It’s good news that the air quality monitor is being installed. We wanted the device to be installed on George Street, due to the proximity to Lindley Infant School and Lindley Junior School. We know that children are particularly vulnerable to air pollution and we want additional measures to help tackle poor air quality outside schools.
“Given the situation with Covid-19, I think the timing is also helpful. We know that dirty air can cause lung and heart damage and a number of studies suggest that the underlying health damage means that respiratory infections, including Covid-19, may have a more serious impact.”
Councillor Anthony Smith added:
“I understand that the device is portable, does not require planning permission and is relatively cheap to operate, as it is solar powered.
“There has been a lot of housing development in Lindley in recent years. As residents and elected members for the Lindley ward, we recognise that air pollution is a major issue and we will continue to work with council officers and other partners to look at ways to improve air quality here. Good air is fundamental to our well-being.”
There are also similar air quality monitoring devices on Westgate in Huddersfield town centre, on Leeds Road and on Huddersfield Road in Mirfield. An additional device will be installed on Huddersfield’s ring road in due course.
Kirklees Council has currently declared 9 Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA) across the district, which includes Ainley Top, which is located partly in the Lindley ward. Local authorities, including Kirklees Council, are required to designate an AQMA where air quality objectives are not being achieved and put together a plan to improve air quality in these areas.

SIGN UP TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY WITH THE COVID-19 RESPONSE
The response from our communities so far has been inspirational. Thank you to everyone who has done something to help others – either by forming mutual aid groups or by choosing to be the best neighbours we can be. We are with you. We’re working alongside citizens and local organisations to support the most vulnerable people in our local places, and we know that your incredible community spirit is essential. For this reason, we are asking everybody – organisations, individuals, businesses and groups – to let us know what support is available. Your offers will then be paired with others who are requesting help.
There are many many things which you could help with during this time, including everything from deciding to do your bit for the neighbours you already know on your street, right through to using relevant skills, training and qualifications which you already have to bolster the social care system and help the most vulnerable.
If you are at low risk from Covid-19 (after checking the symptoms and NHS guidelines) and feel like you would like to volunteer, please continue and fill in the form below.
If you have a more complicated offer of support you can phone the Community Response helpline (which has been set up by Kirklees Council) specifically for the purpose of supporting the Covid-19 crisis. LIB DEMS WIN LINDLEY
Thank you to everyone who voted Lib Dem in the Lindley ward.
Delighted to have three Lib Dem Councillors working hard in our area.
NEW LIB DEM CANDIDATE FOR LINDLEY
Lindley Lib Dems have selected a new candidate for the Kirklees district elections in May.
Anthony Smith will be the Liberal Democrat candidate this year, and will fight to join Cllr Cahal Burke and Cllr Richard Eastwood in the Lindley ward.
The selection follows the decision that incumbent Lindley councillor Gemma Wilson will not seek re-election in May, due to ongoing personal commitments.
Councillor Gemma Wilson, who has been a councillor for Lindley since 2015, defected from Kirklees Conservative group and joined Kirklees Liberal Democrats in June 2018.
In explaining why she is stepping down and is not seeking re-election, Cllr Wilson said:
“I would like to thank my colleagues in Lindley and to the wider party, who have all been great to work with and have been enormously supportive. It’s been an amazing privilege to work with them.
I’ve had to step back at times this year for personal reasons, but I believe that Lindley has an excellent candidate in Anthony Smith, who has my full support.
Of course, I’m looking forward to continuing to work with my colleagues at all the various community events in Lindley. “
Cllr Burke and Cllr Eastwood have paid tribute to Cllr Wilson and acknowledged her support over the course of the year.
Councillor Burke said:
“I would like to thank Gemma for her hard work this year. It’s been great to have a united team in Lindley and to be able to work together to support our residents.
We have to look forward now, and I would like to welcome our new candidate.
Anthony lives locally and is a long-standing member of the party. He’s also hugely active in the community and has been working closely with local community groups for a long time. He’s a hard worker and I’m confident that he would be a fantastic addition to our team and to Lindley.
We’ll continue to fight to get a good deal for local people and work together for the people of Lindley ward.”
