FUNDING AGREED TO PREVENT DOG FOULING

Area Committee for Huddersfield approves funding of £1100 to tackle the problem of dog fouling in Lindley Ward.

Cllr Cahal Burke (Lib Dem) says:

“Dog mess is an eyesore and a health hazard, particularly in parks and play areas used by children. Time and time again, I have been asked by local residents to do something about this issue. Therefore, I am pleased that the Area Committee has agreed to provide funding of £1100 to tackle the problem.

I agree that the majority of dog owners are responsible people and will clear up any mess their dogs make in public areas. However, it is the minority that spoil it and require further action to be taken by the Council. We can’t sit back and hope the problem will go away, therefore this funding will enable provision of six ‘DIY’ dispensers and also disposal bags to be located at key places throughout the ward.

The provision of dispensers and disposal bags will just be part of an overall approach to tackle the problem. I will be working closely with Dog Wardens and residents to promote responsible dog ownership. However, if it is considered necessary, I will be looking for fines to be issued to offenders.”

Dog owners have a legal duty to clean up after their dogs. This means that anyone in charge of a dog commits an offence when they do not clean up any fæces left by their pet. The person responsible can be issued with a fixed penalty notice or prosecuted in the Magistrates Court where a fine of up to £1,000 can be issued.

People can find out how to report any dog fouling in their by area by visiting the Council’s website:-http://www.kirklees.gov.uk/community/animals/dogsFouling.shtml

SECOND NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL FOR LINDLEY MOOR

Cllr Burke against Proposal for new housing development on Lindley Moor

Cllr Burke against Proposal for new housing development on Lindley Moor

You may be aware that an application will soon be submitted to the Council to construct 31 houses on land on Lindley Moor Road.

I am concerned regarding the impact on local infrastructure, schools, roads etc. The local schools are already full and one needs a portable building to accommodate the children already living in Lindley. This situation can only get worse if this development is allowed.

Once the application has been listed it can be viewed on the Kirklees Council website at www2.kirklees.gov.uk/business/planning/application_search/default.aspx

Once listed If you wish to make a comment on this application you can email planning at planning.contactcentre@kirklees.gov.uk, comment on the Council website at

or write to the Planning Department at:
Civic 3, Market Street, Huddersfield, HD1 2EY quoting the above planning application number.

LINDLEY OVER 60’s SOCIAL GROUP

Cllr Burke supporting local over 60’s group.

A successful over 60’s club from the Lindley area is being helped with the cost of taking its members on day trips by Huddersfield Area Committee.

Established five years ago by former councillor Chistine Stanfield – who continues to help run the group – Lindley Chimes provides a weekly opportunity for older people from the local area and beyond to meet up and socialise. In addition to the Chimes weekly gathering on
a Tuesday from 11am at Lindley Liberal Club where the 50+ members enjoy games, activities and refreshments, they also enjoy regular trips and days out around the region.

The funding of £1200 which will pay for the groups transport costs for the year was organised by Cllr Cahal Burke who is the current Lindley Councillor.

Cllr Cahal Burke said:

“Chimes is a real asset for the older people living in the Lindley area. It gives people the chance to get out regularly, meet up and enjoy themselves which really enriches their lives. Social isolation is something we hear a lot about and it really is terrible. Communities needs volunteer groups like Chimes so people have options open to them. I personally think the council should support as many of these groups as possible and hope that the number of people joining Chimes continues to grow in the future.”

Cllr Burke also gave special thanks to Lindley Liberal Club for the excellent job the venue does hosting and facilitating Chimes each week.

I attended St. Philip’s in Birchencliffe, to welcome our uniformed groups as Birchencliffe Scouts and guides celebrate their 50th Anniversary.

The service was followed by the Birchencliffe Big Lunch in the community centre celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation. It was great to see so many people enjoying this community event, well done to everyone involved in organising such a successful occasion.

Organisers of the inaugural Lindley 10k charity running event have announced that the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice will be the running events official charity.

Samantha Wood, Senior Community Fundraiser for the charity said:
“We are extremely grateful to the Lindley Community Group for choosing to support Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice by organising the 10k and the Lindley Carnival. So much hard work and effort has been put in to making the weekend a huge success, and we can’t wait to see the results!”

Lindley 10K is being organised by the Lindley Community Group in partnership with local schools, community groups, running clubs and Kirklees Integrated Youth Support.

CLLR CAHAL BURKE COMPLETES MARATHON CHALLENGE FOR YORKSHIRE REGIMENT

Cllr Cahal Burke

Cllr Cahal Burke

Cllr Cahal Burke Completes Marathon Challenge for Yorkshire Regiment

In April Cllr Cahal Burke (Lib Dem, Lindley Ward) crossed the finishing line outside Old Trafford completing the 37th Greater Manchester Marathon.

This was the final leg of Cahal’s marathon fundraising challenge which had already seen him complete Blackpool Half Marathon and the Great North West Half Marathon earlier in the year as part of raising money and awareness for the Mayor’s Charity Appeal which this year is the Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Trust.

Having taken running up three years ago this was Cahal’s first attempt at a marathon length run. He crossed the line just over 4 hours in 4:05:57 and has so far has attracted £250 in sponsorship for the Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Trust which provides financial support to current and former soldiers and their families.

People can continue to sponsor Cllr Burke by visiting www.justgiving.com/C-Burke or by texting HUDD77 followed by the amount to 70070.

The first Manchester Marathon was run in 1908. It was the first ever amateur marathon to be run using the now established marathon distance of 26 miles 385 yard distance. This years 37th Greater Manchester Marathon course was 26.2 miles and the route took in the Trafford Quays area, Media City, Sale, Brooklands, Timperley, Altrincham, Urmston and Stretford.
Runners from across the world came to compete at the showcase event, which is expected to raise £2m for charity and it started and finished near Manchester United’s Old Trafford Stadium. Before starter’s orders there was 26-second silence followed by a 26-second applause in memory of those who died and were injured in the terror attack on the Boston Marathon earlier this month.
Cllr Burke (Lib Dem) said:

“It’s been a real pleasure to undertake and complete this fundraising challenge in support of the Mayor’s Charity Appeal. The Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Trust does a remarkable job supporting soldiers and their families and it’s always been a priority of mind to use my profile as a local councillor to support important charities such as this. It’s been hard fitting in the training around my council work, my job and my home life but I’m really glad to have managed it to have been part of such a wonderful event on Sunday and to be one of the thousands of people out raising money for worthwhile causes.”

Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr David Ridgway said:

“I am really grateful to Cahal for taking up this challenge on behalf of the Mayor’s Charity Appeal. The Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Trust needs our support more now than at any time. It makes no distinction of age, length of service, theatre of operations, type of award or rank and all monies raised go to helping soldiers and their dependants. Once again, my sincere thanks go to Cahal and those that have sponsored him over the weekend – thy money will mean a great deal to the Trust and the vital work it does.”

MULTI USE GAMES AREA FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

ymca launch web

On Friday 12 April 2013, Kirklees Council and Huddersfield YMCA held a launch party for the refurbished Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) situated at Huddersfield YMCA on New Hey Road.

The MUGA was revamped with £4,897 of funding agreed by Huddersfield Area Committee in July last year as part of a response to concerns about a lack of proper facilities for local young people and an increase in low level anti-social behaviour.

As part of the revamp works the MUGA was been repaired, renovated and lit.

In return for the investment, the YMCA will make the MUGA available for public use regularly on evenings and weekends and take responsibility for its upkeep. Kirklees Integrated Youth Support Service has also been providing one session of organised sports activities at the MUGA each week since early January 2013. The sessions take place each Monday evening between 6.30-8.15pm for 13-19 year olds.

At the launch event, there were a range of activities for young people to try out including: football, dodgeball, touch rugby, unihoc, easy gliders, slack lines or power kits. The mobile youth club was also be on site.

Cllr Cahal Burke who was instrumental in bringing the proposal to the Committee said:

“I am really pleased that the young people living in Salendine Nook, Oakes and Lindley areas will now have a place they can go and play in good quality facilities. And in comparison to building a whole new MUGA from scratch, the investment here is a fraction – so we’ve got really good value for money. The project is a really good example of what can be achieved by the council working in partnership with local community organisations which is something I am very in favour of. I am sure that between the YMCA and the Council’s Integrated Youth Support Service, the place is going to see plenty of use this summer and in the future.”

BLACKPOOL HALF MARATHON 2013

150459_378508338930129_1625832130_n
I completed the Blackpool Half Marathon today, supporting the Mayor of Kirklees Charity Appeal (The Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Trust).

In just over 3 years The Yorkshire Regiment has disbursed £300,000 in benevolence.

Over 1000 separate grants have been made to those soldiers and their families of the regiment, and all its antecedent regiments, who have found themselves in difficulty or need.

This assistance through The Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Trust is increasing year on year both in the number of cases it deals with and the amount of money it spends on grants.

I finish with the Greater Manchester Marathon on the 28th of April.
