Delighted to be asked by Lindley Bowling Club to present trophies and medals at the Junior School Bowling competition between Lindley Junior School and Moorlands Primary School.

I am delighted that our Lindley Street Party on Friday 23rd June will be part of The Great Get Together in memory of Jo Cox MP.

The Lindley Street Party is the first of three events taking place on the last weekend in June as part of the Lindley Community Group weekend of events.

Thank you to everyone who voted and supported our campaign in the Colne Valley.

I would like to congratulate our new MP Thelma Walker and offer my commiserations to all the other candidates especially our outgoing MP Jason McCartney.

Personally I am hugely disappointed by the result, however across the country we hoped to hold our ground and it looks like we will not only do that but have net gains to celebrate too.

The path back from our 2015 defeat was always going to be a long one. In many ways, this election came too soon for the Liberal Democrats.

We will continue to campaign locally and nationally for better funding for our NHS and social care and schools, and to stand up to the Conservatives over their heartless dementia tax.

Up to 478 children living in poverty across the Colne Valley constituency will have their lunches taken away under Theresa May’s plans to abolish universal free school lunches for infants, Liberal Democrat research has revealed. In total 3,790 children in the Colne Valley constituency are set to lose out under the plans.

Those families losing out are expected to have to pay around £440 per child per year for their school lunches.

The Liberal Democrats have also calculated that under Conservative costings of just under 7p per child’s breakfast, each child could expect to receive either half a boiled egg, one slice of bread with 12 baked beans or 37.5 cornflakes and 100ml of semi-skimmed milk.

Commenting on the figures, Cahal Burke (Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate) said:

“Theresa May’s cruel policy will mean 478 children living in poverty in the Colne Valley constituency will lose out on free school lunches.

“This will mean greater inequality and struggling families having to pay hundreds of pounds on lunches a year.

“The Conservatives’ promise of a free breakfast is cynical and clearly not designed to reach all children. They have set aside a meagre 7p per breakfast per child, the price of half a boiled egg or just one slice of bread with 12 baked beans.

“The Liberal Democrats will stand up against this mean-spirited vision of Britain and extend free school lunches to all primary school children.”

A mock estate agency called “Theresa May and Co” has been launched by the Liberal Democrats today attacking Theresa May’s Dementia Tax. http://www.theresamayand.co

The Conservative policy would force the sale of family homes to fund care for elderly and vulnerable relatives.

The party has estimated that the Dementia Tax would cost £63,165 for someone receiving ten years of care living in an average-priced home in the Colne Valley constituency.

Across the Colne Valley constituency 42.1% of the value of the average home would be wiped out to pay for the Dementia Tax.

“Theresa May wants to force you to sell your house if you need long-term care.

“The effects of this cruel and unfair policy will be massive, and will have a huge people on people across our community.

“Elderly and vulnerable people across the Colne Valley constituency face losing 42.1% of their home to fund this ill-conceived policy, with nine out of ten homes potentially at risk.

“This is like a new type of inheritance tax – but one that’s targeted at people of modest means, not the wealthy. The Conservatives want to tax ordinary hardworking families out of their savings and homes if their relative is unfortunate enough to need years of care: it is grotesquely unfair.

“There is a week left in this campaign: if Theresa May fails to come clean to the British public, how can she be trusted?

Twelve years on from the ban, the Act is under threat as there are moves by the Conservatives to repeal the Hunting Act 2004.

Theresa May also confirmed that she supports and wants to bring back fox hunting.

I am against the cruelty of wild animals being chased, often to the point of exhaustion, before being purposely set upon by packs of dogs, for so called ‘sport’.

You cannot solve the crisis in our NHS and social care services by simply imposing more top-down targets on staff and plucking numbers out of thin air. (LABOUR PROPOSALS)

The Liberal Democrats are the only party with a fully costed plan to deliver £6bn more per year for the NHS and social care by putting a penny on income tax.

This is a plan endorsed by senior health experts including the former head of NHS England David Nicholson.

We will be honest with the public that giving the NHS and social care the funding they need will mean us all chipping in a little more.

A group of 26 leading health experts including the former chief executive of the NHS David Nicholson, the ex-head of the Royal College of Nursing Peter Carter and the former chair of the Royal College of GPs Clare Gerada all backed Liberal Democrat plans on the NHS in a letter to the Observer.

Huddersfield Town supporters Cllr Richard Eastwood and Cllr Cahal Burke attended the play off final at Wembley.

To celebrate the historic victory of Huddersfield Town, our town will come together for a Civic Ceremony in St. George’s Square from 6.20pm today (Tuesday 30 May 2017).

David Wagner and the First Team squad will travel from the John Smith’s Stadium to St. George’s Square, via Northumberland Street, arriving in the town centre at around 6.20pm.
There, several players, key figures from the Club’s historic season and the Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Christine Iredale will address fans from the stage.

The following roads will be closed before, during and after the event.
From 12pm to 9pm:

– St George’s Square at it’s junction with John William Street (bottom end of the square)
From 3pm to 9pm:
– Railway Street, from Westgate to John William Street

The Brexit squeeze of a falling pound and rising import costs is hitting families across Britain, with higher prices in the shops denting incomes and leaving us all poorer.

This is deeply worrying news for our economy, which has been propped up by consumer spending.

The Government must urgently act to reverse this growing squeeze on living standards.

The best way to protect British consumers and businesses would be to change course on Brexit and fight to stay in the Single Market.

If Theresa May chooses to plough ahead with a hard Brexit, our declining living standards will be on her watch and her head. You can’t have a hard Brexit and a strong economy.

I would like to wish the new Mayor of Kirklees Cllr Christine Iredale, and her consort Robert, a fantastic year in office. I know Christine is extremely proud to be the first Golcar Councillor elected to the role.

Christine’s charities for the next year will be Dementia UK and The Alzheimer’s’ Society.

Christine was born in Kirkheaton and was educated at Kirkheaton CE School. She moved to Cowlersley in 1960.

She left school at the age of 15 to work in the textile industry and later went on to work as a Home Care Assistant for 18 years.

Christine is married to Robert, and has 2 daughters, Rochelle and Briony, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, with whom she spends as much time as possible.

Christine was elected as a Liberal Democrat Councillor in 2003 and became chair of the Licensing and Safety Committee in 2007. She has also served on the Planning Sub-Committee (Huddersfield Area) and Overview and Scrutiny Panel for Well-Being and Communities.

She is involved in many local activities, which include being a member of Milnsbridge Liberal Club and Milnsbridge Bowling Club. She is also a member on the Longwood Sing Committee, a member of the Women’s Section of the Royal British Legion, and a keen supporter of Golcar Lily Day.
