HIGHWAYS SCHEME FUNDED TO TACKLE PARKING PROBLEM OUTSIDE SAINSBURY’S STORE

Lindley Ward Councillors have funded a highways scheme to regulate parking outside a sheltered housing complex and supermarket.  £7,000 was allocated by the councillors at the Huddersfield Town and Valley Committee on Wednesday 27th January 2011.

The scheme, as presented to the committee, will tackle parking problems caused by the inconsiderate parking of customers and staff at the local Sainsbury’s store which opened on Laund Road in 2009.

Councillors were contacted by residents with complaints that customers were parking up on the pavements and obstructing parking outside their homes.  Also, that the problem was being exacerbated by staff who were parking on Laund Road for long periods.  According to the report put to the committee, Sainsbury’s management took action to get staff to park elsewhere but further observations indicate that problems continue to persist, especially at peak traffic times and on Saturdays and Sundays when parking in the stores car park is at a premium.

The scheme will involve the implementation of a traffic regulation order to prevent parking on stretches of Laund Road and Moor Hill Road entirely while there will also be a small designated parking area on Laund Road which will allow motorists to stop for a short period.  There will be extensive road marking & signing.

Cllr Cahal Burke said:

“We were approached by a number of residents living in the area and at the sheltered housing complex complaining that people were parking up on pavements, blocking driveways and potentially blocking access for emergency and other services.  Cllr Woodhead and I raised this with highways and this scheme has been designed to resolve the issues outside the supermarket.”

Cllr Tony Woodhead said:

“I am certain that the residents will be glad to see we’ve done something positive to change how things are. We’ll be keeping an eye on how things progress once the scheme is in place.”

Where am I gonna park for work then??? I have to drive cause I live so far away. Sainsbury’s don’t even own that car park, it’s Bhular Bros and we aren’t allowed to park in the back ‘staff’ car park either! If this goes through I’ll have a huge walk from my car to work!
